Ocean Voices: Share your voice

ocean.jpgWhat is Ocean Voices? Sound artist Halsey Burgund and marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols joined forces to collect the voices of people around the world recounting their personal experiences with the ocean. Combined with music written by Halsey, these voices will soon become audio collages which listeners can create to suit their own preferences. Help them by sharing your voice and spreading the words of all participants around the globe.

The ocean surrounds us and sustains us. We can only preserve life in the ocean by working together as a global community. 8-Bit Trip

Swedish musicians Daniel Larsson (music) and Thomas Redigh (animation) succeed in creating the world’s trippiest 8-Bit experience. The video description reads, 1500 hours of moving legobricks and take photos of them. To put that into perspective 1500 hours = 62.5 sleepless days. Raccoon-tailed Mario, Megaman, Puyo Pop, Tetris, Pong, and Karate masters (possibly from Karate Champ?), all make celebrity guest appearances.

Xchange Streaming and Audio/Sound Art Archive

radio.jpge-lab/rixc/riga has re-made the Xchange website. Check it out:

Xchange is a pioneering streaming audio and sound art project on the Internet. It was launched in 1997 by Riga based artists group E-LAB (Rasa Smite, Raitis Smits, Jaanis Garancs) in collaboration with various other emerging net.radio initiatives from all over the world. The Xchange mailinglist for information exchange and communication was started in December 1997. The Xchange community reached its’ highest activity in 1998 and 1999 – when the most dynamic experiments with collaborative streaming possibilities took place during X-Open Channel sessions. Co-sessions were facilitated by E-LAB net.radio Ozone weekly webcast-programmes, during which live stream loops were created for connecting two and more participants from different locations of the network. In 1998 Xchange project received the PRIX Ars Electronica “Award of Distinction” in the net.category. Continue reading

Sometimes Always: Listening in on Audio Art [ca Nova Scotia]

448px_sometimesalways2_1000.jpg[Image: Craig Leonard, Adventures on the Wheels of Steel, 2009] Sometimes Always: Listening in on Audio Art :: June 5- August 30, 2009 :: Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 1723 Hollis Street
Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Obsolete technologies and anachronistic electronic devices are cleverly resuscitated by 10 international artists in Sometimes Always. Co-organized with the Centre for Art Tapes and presented in tandem with Sound Bytes, Halifax’s month-long audio art festival, the show harnesses the nostalgia associated with outmoded media to reflect on our shifting emotional connections to technology.

Several projects reinvest antiquated technologies such as eight-track players and audio cassettes with new artistic potential. Local artist Craig Leonard modifies bicycle wheels into low-fi musical instruments by adding duct-tape patterns to the spokes. Continue reading
