Stephen Vitiello’s “Something Like Fireworks” [us Wellesley, MA]

vitiello1.jpgIn his first solo exhibition in New England, sound artist and electronic musician Stephen Vitiello creates Something Like Fireworks, a new installation at the Davis Museum in Wellesley. The installation, done in collaboration with lighting designer Jeremy Choate, features Vitiello’s field recordings from the Australian outback, the Canadian wilderness, a Virginia marsh, and New York City’s streets. Vitiello’s soundtrack moves between the abstract and the recognizable, attuning us to the subtleties of ambient sound. In this piece, sound is connected with light and color, creating an immersive synaesthetic experience. The lighting has been designed in sympathy with the audio, and the resulting combination surrounds the visitor, altering our spatial perception. The installation is on view through June 6 at the Davis Museum on the campus of Wellesley College. Continue reading

Live Stage: Experiments on the Notation of Shapes [hk Hong Kong]

ens1.jpgExperiments on the Notation of Shapes by Joao Vasco Paiva :: February 12 – April 4, 2010 :: Opening Reception: February 12; 7:00 – 9:00 pm :: Artist Talk: March 24; 7:00 pm :: Unmeasured Music: March 31; 7.30 pm :: I/O (Input/ Output), 31 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Experiments on the Notation of Shapes by Portuguese artist and Hong Kong resident, Joao Vasco Paiva, is a generative multi-channel video installation where Hong Kong cityscapes are used as coordinates for sound synthesis. Computational translation, footage of urban planning and architectural elements are used as a musical score. In this work, a post-apocalyptic aura consumes the concrete form of the metropolis. Two wall-based projections present Hong Kong cityscapes. The city, its emptiness and its structure are kept in “time images” that solicit contemplation. Continue reading

Merkur by Roberto Paci Dalò [at Vienna + online]

rpd1.jpgMerkur by Roberto Paci Dalò :: Live from Studio RP4, ORF Funkhaus Wien :: Broadcast in 5.1 Surround Sound :: December 6, 2009; 11:03 – 11:45 pm (CET) :: live streaming; shortwave broadcasting.

A performance based on the invisible architecture of sound and electric dust. A farewell dealing with the space through resonance, reverbs, echoes. A chemical laboratory where thin acoustical textures are developed through revolving layers and abstract forms. Moving on the threshold between broken melodies (coming in part from John Dowland’s vocal fragments), loops, soundscapes, and noise.

Some of the Merkur’s materials have been developed by Roberto Paci Dalò and Alexandra Purcaru through a residency at Hotel Pupik (Austria) during Summer 2009 and premiered in New York at Experimental Intermedia (October 09). Continue reading

urban sound stories is a five-part series of sounds and photographs as soundscapes of European cities. The artists participating in this “curated by”project were selected by Gruenrekorder, a German based organization and label for phonography, field recording and soundscape.

Five sound artists — Simon Whetham, Tobias Bolt, Eric Cordier, Lasse-Marc Riek and Roland Etzin — explore eight places each, in five different cities, using the means of phonography and photography. The exploration of artificial and natural space within the city takes place within the same space of time. Continue reading

Live Stage: A Thing About Machines [uk Coventry]

thing2.jpgA Thing About Machines :: September 24 – 27, 2009 :: Festival Launch Party: 7:00 – 11:00 p.m.:: The Herbert, Jordan Well, Coventry, CV1 5QP.

A Thing About Machines is Coventry’s first and best *OTHER* Art Festival dedicated to local hero Delia Derbyshire exploring art and music that uses, reinterprets, reviews or renews technology invented in the past 100 years..

This year’s festival was inspired by Tangerine Dream’s 1976 concert in Coventry Cathedral (we like unwieldy analogue synths and use of unexpected venues here). We want to explore the relationship Art can have with its surroundings. Transformation of a space, transportation from a place, response to surroundings, interaction and reaction.” Continue reading

Live Stage: Sensory Threads [uk London]

sensorythreads.jpgSensory Threads @ Surface Tension :: June 23, 2009; 10:30 am – 4:30 pm :: The Science Museum’s Dana Centre, 165 Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, London.

Sensory Threads — by Proboscis — is a work-in-progress to develop an instrument enabling a group of people to create a soundscape reflecting their collaborative experiences in the environment. For this interactive sensory experience, we are designing sensors for detecting environmental phenomena at the periphery of human perception as well as the movement and proximity of the wearers themselves. Possible targets for the sensors may be electro-magnetic radiation, hi/lo sound frequencies, heart rate etc). The sensors’ datastreams will feed into generative audio software, creating a multi-layered and multi-dimensional soundscape feeding back the players’ journey through their environment. Variations in the soundscape reflect changes in the wearers interactions with each other and the environment around them.
