Sensing Shared Places: Designing a mobile audio streaming environment by Rui Chaves and Pedro Rebelo :: This paper addresses mobile audio streaming in the context of sharing a sense of place. This action is mediated by the network, the body and remote listening. These elements are essential in the concept and design of a platform for audio transmission ( liveshout ), that aims at intersecting mobility within the realms of radio, network and transmission art.

The Department for the Coordination of Scientific and Musical Research seeks to reinforce the interaction between the scientific and musical community by appealing to the computer music community at large. This program offers scholarships to artists and young professionals wishing to take advantage of a period of residency at IRCAM in order to pursue their music research projects in a stimulating collaborative environment. Each year - via online submission - a limited number of candidates is selected by a panel of international experts based on the following criteria: project content; scientific and artistic motivation; quality and innovative character of the project; mastery of the technologies needed for the project; demonstrated ability to manage a collaborative research project. Ricardo Climent will discuss his new research in music composition and new media, involving the use of audio metadata and 3D game-engine software. Climent is an active music composer. He often finds in the field of music technology, original new routes and stimuli to explore and develop distinctive aspects in his music, both in the creative and performing environment. Carrie Bodle: Sewing Sonifications Performance :: October 10, 2009; 2:00 - 6:00 pm :: Westlake Park, Seattle, WA.

Visual and sound artist Carrie Bodle will create a five-channel sound installation and sewing performance sonifying data from an ecosystem model developed by UW oceanographic scientist Dr. Neil Banas. Sound is translated from data, then visualized and made tactile by the artist embroidering the combined waveform into a continuous sound wave.

This computer model simulates the growth and consumption of plankton in the ocean ecosystem along the Washington coast during summer 2005. The five sound channels broadcast five dimensions in this data: Continue reading

Sensory Response Systems :: Ryan Jordan presents and performs his Sensory Response Systems as part of a micro_residency at General Public, Schanhauser Allee 167c, Berlin, Germany :: July 29 - August 1.

Sensory Response Systems is an exploration into audio-visual performance using an array of sensors responsive to physical movements in order to control the audio-visual output in programmes such as pd and Max/MSP. It also looks at reshaping and replicating the body through the use of fabric, textiles and technology. Yutaka Makino is an artist and researcher currently based in Los Angeles. He seeks to amalgamate the historic precedents of computer music and science, involving research in spatial perception, complex dynamical systems and emergence. His works range from sculpture to sound works including performance, computer music composition and spatial sound installation. He has been working on spatial compositions for Wave Field Synthesis. His recent commission work, Amorphous for Wave Field Synthesis, was premiered at the International Gaudeamus Music Week 2008 with the Foundation Game of Life’s 192.8ch Wave Field Synthesis System. The Institute of Unnecessary Research presents e-MobLArt — Exhibition of the European Mobile Lab for Interactive Media Artists following a one year collaboration :: May 20 - June 10, 2009 :: Opening: May 20; 8:00 pm :: Center for Contemporary Art - Warehouse B1, Thessaloníki, Greece.

The exhibition includes two projects involving Anna Dumitriu: KryoLab is an installation that brings together bioart, ice sculpture and sound, in an investigation of delicate relationships in the Arctic ecosystem. This work is about our journey, the experience of participating in the E-MobiLArt project, working with artists from other backgrounds and travelling to new locations. Initial discussions about the nature of arctic, the sound of cracking ice, the disintegration of ice with sound, and the bacterial flora of the Arctic, discussed under the hot Athens sun at the first workshop gained momentum during long nights of conversation illuminated by the cool midnight sun at the edge of the Arctic Circle.
