SquareTangle: A Virtual Art Performance Company

square.jpgSquareTangle virtual art performance company launches with an open source plug-in for artists and sound designers.

Renowned Australian virtual artists John McCormick and Adam Nash today announced the formation of SquareTangle, a virtual/art/performance company, as a milestone in their Australia Council Inter-Arts Connections Residency at Hidden Cove Solutions.

They have released the first results of this productive collaborative residency, in the form of a plug-in that allows the FMOD sound designer to be used within the Unity game development environment. Continue reading

Pubic Sound Objects – A shared Sonic Environment

pso.jpgThe Public Sound Objects (PSOs) is a Shared Sonic Environment for experimental music available as an installation or as a web based system. It is targeted to the general Public and it does not require previous music knowledge. A user can join a collaborative performance using a “Bouncing Ball Java Interface” by manipulating Sound Objects in a central soundserver.

To run the client software properly you need to have Java installed and a Standard MIDI Synthesizer. The Public Sound Objects Software is Open Source under a GPL Licence. Source code can be downloaded. A video essay can be found here. Continue reading

Net_Music_Weekly: “Hard Data” by R. Luke DuBois

Luke DuBois [Needs Flash plugin and speakers; wait for data to load] Hard Data is a data-mining, sonification, and visualization project that uses statistics from the American military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq as source material for an interactive audiovisual composition based around an open-source “score” of events. Using Xenakis’ understanding of formalized music as a starting point, DuBois draws upon a variety of statistical data ranging from the visceral (civilian deaths, geospatial renderings of military actions) to the mundane (fiscal year budgets for the war) to generate a dataset that can be used for any number of audiovisual compositions. Pure Data Tutorial for Composers Released

kreidlercov.jpgThe big Pure Data (Pd) tutorial written by Johannes Kreidler with the help of a grant by the Music University of Freiburg / Germany, is now online, in English and in German. It is also available as a book (paperback) at Wolke Publishing House.

This tutorial is designed for self-study, principally for composers. It begins with explanations of basic programming and acoustic principles then gradually builds up to the most advanced electronic music processing techniques. The book’s teaching approach is focused primarily on hearing, which we consider a faster and more enjoyable way to absorb new concepts than through abstract formulas.

The patches described are available for download.
