Composer Mary Jane Leach at the Stone, Avenue C & E. 2nd St., New York, NY :: From 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Friday night, October 28, 2011 :: You’ll get to hear the US premiere of her new piece for 10 flutes - Dowland’s Tears, with video provided by the flutist, Manuel Zurria :: There will be a 10pm set afterwards featuring the music of Annea Lockwood :: Admission is $10 per set :: All admissions are at the door.

Also in the set will be some older pieces leaning heavy on sound phenomena, with new computer-generated visuals replacing the old ones that used slide projectors and dissolve units.

Theo Burt is a UK-based artist working with sound, video and light. His work draws on interests in perceptual relationships between sound and image and aesthetic applications of technology. Burt’s recent projects have focused on the use of related sound and video to create a transparency of process, and the effect of partial-predictability on perceptions of time. His work includes installations, live performances and fixed-media pieces.

Throughout six weeks in July and August, the Sunday Sound Waves series will aim to critically engage with the surrounding environment through sound, and to explore the influences it has on new ways of making and experiencing visual forms.

The series includes a broad range of artists and creators who are increasingly blurring genre lines and sensibilities in the realms of sound and visual culture. Participating artists will do this by recording the sounds of architectural spaces, re-inventing musical instruments, using sound as a sculptural material, or working with music and cinematography. You’re Not My Father, by Paul Slocum, [Requires Quicktime plugin] is composed of a sequence of recreations of a 10 second scene from the television show Full House, overlaid with sound loops from the scene’s original music. The crews who re-shot the scene were recruited through Internet message boards and Craigslist; each was paid $150. Instructions for shooting the scene and delivering the footage were issued to the crews. To-date, the project includes participants from Austin, Cincinnati, Chicago, Dallas, Denton, London, and San Francisco. Continue reading

Due to shifts in the contexts of the production and presentation of the music video, more and more people start to talk about a possible end of this genre. At the same time disciplines such as visual-, film- and media-studies, art- and music-history begin to realize that despite the fact that the music video obviously has come of age, they still lack a well defined and matching methodical approach for analyzing and discussing videoclips.

For the first time this volume brings together different disciplines as well as journalists, museum curators and gallery owners in order to take a discussion of the past and present of the music video as an opportunity to reflect upon suited methodological approaches to this genre and to allow a glimpse into its future. The project was born from the need to create a living-performance based on sounds,videos, photos, drawings, texts that have to do with a daily past forgotten even by a few minutes. We ask you to donate to this project a part of your past or recent memory.

All donated material that you submit will be processed in real time during a live national premiere to be held in Rome between 2 months and you will be clearly informed, as project’s makers.

Moments of Inertia is an evening-length performance based on a teleological study of gesture in musical performance and how it relates to gesture in intimate social interaction. The work is written for solo violin with real-time computer accompaniment and video. Moments consists of twelve violin études written by R. Luke DuBois for Todd Reynolds – ranging from 1-10 minutes in length – each of which uses a different violin performance gesture as a control input for manipulating a short piece of high-speed film (300 frames-per-second) – of objects and people in motion.
