basic.fm is a new radio station that forms part of Pixel Palace, an exciting programme of digital arts and new media at Tyneside Cinema.
About Pixel Palace

Pixel Palace is the exciting programme of digital arts and new media at Tyneside Cinema. This programme takes the form of arts residencies, commissions, live events and exhibitions. We experiment with new ways of sharing creative work, ideas and stories as we move towards the future of cinema.

Tyneside Cinema’s mission is to bring together people to experience, enjoy and engage with the past, present and future of cinema. Pixel Palace aims to extend and deliver this mission by working with new media artists and curators embracing digital arts, not only to reflect upon the cinema’s past, but to engage new audiences in its expanded present and pervasive future.
Jean Luc Goddard’s classic film “Alphaville” provides a creative starting point for Pixel Palace to explore the influence technology has upon us, shaping our behaviour and understanding of the world.

As Godard predicted, life is indeed shaped by computers. In Alphaville, in our world today, the cinema is everywhere, in the flick of a cigarette lighter, in the glow of a light bulb… it is in the way we perceive our world, in the way we speak, in the way we dream. We have no need of entering a movie theatre to experience cinema; life itself is just like a movie.

Kelly Brougher (2008). ‘The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving image’

Pixel Palace aims to work with artists to investigate the way in which the cinema reflects life but also the way in which technology has an “Alphaville” effect.

How to apply

Please email submissions to Dominic Smith, Digital Arts Manager at the Tyneside Cinema: info [at] thepixelpalace.org with the subject heading: basic.fm

Artists will be notified via email regarding the outcome of their submitted work(s).

Radio Arts Space constructs a gallery inside radio space, where Sound art and Radio art works are exhibited. It explores all the possible ways of exhibiting and reading Radio and Sound art. The project is also complemented by an (international) platform for the discussion of meanings, contextualization, artistic research and the exchange of sound art works. It is not designed as a hermetic space with all the answers given in advance, but as a structurally complex space, which generates new questions.

Radio Arts Space consists from 46 artworks, exhibited by 42 artists from 22 countries. The project Radio Arts Space combines seven independent curatorial perspectives and approaches in its exhibition format (Manja Ristić, Maria Papadomanolaki, Milica Pekić, Ilari Valbonesi, Brane Zorman, Tevž Logar and Robert Sakrowski). The invited curators were given a common starting point: they could choose to put together a selection of works, based on an open call (160 artworks), released by radioCona in May 2011 and/or to choose the authors on their own. This is why some of artists in the exhibition appear several times.

Now embarking on its 32nd year, New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. — an independent not-for-profit organization founded in New York City — continues to agitate the institutional art world through its trailblazing projects, including New American Radio (1987-1998), Turbulence.org (1996-), Networked _ Performance (2004-), Networked _ Music _ Review (2007-), and Networked: a (networked _ book) about (networked _ art) (2009-).

Since 1981, NRPA has commissioned more than 500 works by more than 400 artists, many of them just beginning their careers. The Turbulence.org archive spans a crucial 15-year period of exploration and innovation in digital, networked environments, ranging from hypertext to information visualization, blogs to social networks, and interactive dance/musical compositions to 3-D architecture.

Here’s what Régine Debatty and Timothy Murray have said about Turbulence.org:

“Turbulence because they’ve been consistently commissioning net.art … and because they have a great blog called Networked_Performance that documents better (much better) than me the calls, essays and events that interest the whole new media art community.” Régine Debatty, we-make-money-not-art, 2006

“Turbulence … has developed into a natural archive of Internet art, housing the largest representation of American art produced as networked art. Indeed, no other on-line exhibition project has played such an influential and lasting role.” Timothy Murray, The Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, 2011

“Under the Radar” is a radio violin project by Mia Zabelka for the international sound art project “PhonArt – The lost languages of Europe”. The 9v battery for the pick-up on her electric violin is replaced with power from radio waves transformed to generate electricity.

The concept involves “opening up” radio space, integrating live elements and a soundscape of lost languages, which is processed using MIDI effects generated by the radio-powered violin. Thus a “circuit of radiowaves” is constructed, transforming radio reception into power for the violin, which in turn generates sound and electronic and MIDI effects that are broadcast back into the ether.

The Association of Independents in Radio, Inc. (AIR) today launched the beta site for Localore, a new MQ2-inspired initiative designed to fuel public media’s innovation capacity. Gates are open for producers, stations to sign on.

Through Localore, AIR will recruit talented radio, TV, film, and online producers to lead 10 station-based projects blending approaches to broadcast and digital platforms. The range of radio and television stations signed on to Localore crisscrosses from Vermont to Alabama, Ohio to Arizona, Pittsburgh to the Pacific Northwest. Big stations in major markets have begun to throw their hats into the ring alongside small rural stations, public television dual licensees, and Native American stations out west. Launch stations will be announced at an event on September 22nd at the PRPD’s Public Media Programming Conference in Baltimore.

Radio and television stations interested in taking on a Localore project are encouraged to “raise their hands” and demonstrate their preparedness for incubating Localore innovation by signing on to the Station Runway. There, prospective incubator stations will present three to five minutes of media (slide show, video, or audio piece) showcasing their creative culture, their distinctive community, and their vision for engaging a new community of public media citizens.

Localore producers are invited to submit proposals between today’s launch date — September 15th — and November 10th at Localore.net. A second round of vetting in December will call on producers, matched with incubator stations, to submit final proposals. Projects will launch between March and June 2012, with a time frame of execution anticipated at nine to 12 months.

AIR has assembled its own multiplatform, collaborative production team to lead Localore, including Executive Editor Noland Walker, a Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning producer/director of PBS and independent documentaries, and author/journalist Jessica Clark, who led the Future of Public Media project at American University’s Center for Social Media from 2007 to 2011. She serves as AIR’s Media Strategist.

In many ways, the Localore project reflects the changing composition of AIR itself, with a membership that is rapidly diversifying and expanding public media and journalism. AIR was founded in 1988 by a group of 10 independent public radio producers in New York City. It has since grown into a global, social and professional brain trust of more than 800 producers — both independent and those employed by media organizations — representing an extensive range of disciplines, from NPR news journalists and reporters to sound artists, station-based producers, podcasters, gearheads, web developers, and more. Public media’s leading networks — American Public Media, NPR, PRI — and leading producing stations from across the U.S. are also in the ranks of AIR.
