Apiary Studios would like to invite artists, researchers, geeks, and such like to take part in “Unleashed”, a weekend of collaborative co-exploration of long known or newly to be discovered aspects of media art. Unleashed will take over in East London and create the opportunity to host or participate in an artistic research project. In the spirit of D.I.Y, free, and local community we want to help to kick start new or refine existing projects, meet other interested parties, and engage in valuable exchange of knowledge, critique, and experiences.

We are looking for people who are interested to propose and host a project at this event. All projects should use some sort of technology, be situated in the field of media art, and focus on an open and inclusive approach. We are especially interested in projects that either conceive new tools for making art or make use of existing open source/open technology solutions (such as openFrameworks, Arduino, Processing, PD) to create new pieces or performances. Whilst allowing people to access its underlying technology but also engage in a critical reflection on its political, sociological, or art historical contexts.

Each project host can specify his/her own timeline and use of the space for that weekend as well as the expected outcome.

We are happy to receive your short proposal (250 words with a suggested time line), no matter how obscure it might be, by the 22nd of May.

Location: Apiary Studios <http://www.apiarystudios.org>, 458 Hackney Road, E2 9EG London

Call for Articles: New uses of music in media :: TRANS 16 (2012): Transcultural Music Review :: Special Issue: New uses of music in media ::
Deadline for submitting originals: October 15, 2011.

Transcultural Music Review 16 (2012) will publish a special dossier on the new forms of music in audiovisual media. The dossier will be prepared in collaboration with the research group ‘Musica y medios audiovisuale’ from the Society for Ethnomusicology-SIBE/IASPM-Spain and will be edited by Teresa Fraile, Eduardo Vi’uela, and Maria Edurne Zuazu.

For this dossier, we are particularly interested in the role of music in the emergence of new genres (such as mash-ups, lip-dubs, etc.) and in the transformation of the discursive strategies of the traditional media (film, TV programs, music videos, video games, etc.). The contemporary audiovisual panorama is constantly changing. On the one hand, there is a fruitful interchange between different genres and formats, such as the dialogue between music video, advertising and film; an interchange in which the music is deeply involved. This enables music to take different functions in the discourses of these media, thus transforming them, and at the same time, opens a new palette of expressive resources. On the other hand, the spread and democratization of new technologies has brought about these new musical genres that also imply new forms of consumption and point toward a different aesthetic framework.

Music is now at the core of a boiling, creative audiovisual production where its relationships with image and the other sound elements are not what they used to be, obliging us to rethink our approaches and understanding of the role of music in media.

We welcome contributions that approach these new phenomena and processes, especially those with an interdisciplinary perspective. Some topics include but are not limited to the following:

Music and the blurring of media genres and formats.
Sound art and image (sound installations, etc.).
Music in film trailers.
Audiovisual formats in live performance.
New forms of consumption and technology.
Rockumentaries or ‘making of’ the album, band, etc.
Production of music for and with mobile technology (cell phones, MP3 players, etc.).
New theoretical models for media analysis.

We open the call for submission of articles on this topic. Articles may be written in English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese.

Demo - Exhibiting and Demonstrating Interactive Media:: a symposium with Peter Lunenfeld on :: April, 6, 2010; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. :: Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs , 31, rue d’Ulm, 75005 Paris (France) :: reservations.

The conference is programmed for the Printemps des Sciences humaines et sociales of the Maison européenne des sciences de l’homme et de la société de Lille (MESHS), in conjunction with the research project Praticables* and in partnership with EnsadLab, a research laboratory of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (Paris - France) and Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing- France).

Engineers are used to creating demonstrators to present, test and improve their products. Artists, on the other hand, rely on exhibitions to present their work. Scientists consider this model of the fine arts exhibition as unfit for their purposes. The question, however, that needs to be addressed is how to rethink the exhibition so that it is no longer conceived as a showcase for finished artworks but as a truly experimental environment for the testing and creation of artistic experiences in collaboration with the audience. In other words, is it possible to combine exhibition and demonstration, genuine artistic experiences with the promotion of technological innovation, balancing artistic and technological aspects to the greatest benefit of both?

Pratt Manhattan Gallery presents Broadcast Yourself, a symposium that will contrast traditional media with the “YouTube” Generation :: April 1, 2009; 6:30 pm :: Lecture Hall 213, 144 West 14th Street, NYC.

Broadcast Yourself will address the issues of power and control extended by traditional media outlets in contrast with the do-it-yourself attitude pervasive in the tech-savvy younger generation. Symposium panelists will also speak to the impact that radio and television can have in shaping the events of our time; how artists can directly engage, challenge, or subvert the structure and authority of broadcast media; and how our culture is shaped by the actions of individuals and artists.

Speakers will include NPR “On The Media” host Brooke Gladstone, Broadcast curator Irene Hofmann, and Broadcast participating artists Gregory Green, Angel Nevarez and Valarie Tevere of neuroTransmitter, and Siebren Versteeg.

The symposium will accompany Broadcast, a traveling exhibition co-organized by the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, and iCI (Independent Curators International), New York; circulated by iCI; and guest-curated by Irene Hofmann. The exhibition comes to Pratt Manhattan Gallery from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, and the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore. The exhibition and tour are made possible, in part, with support from the iCI Exhibition Partners.

The exhibition is on view now through May 2, 2009 and features work by Dara Birnbaum; Chris Burden; Gregory Green; Doug Hall, Chip Lord, and Jody Procter; Christian Jankowski; Inigo Manglano-Ovalle; Antoni Muntadas; neuroTransmitter; Nam June Paik; TVTV (Top Value Television); and Siebren Versteeg.

Speaker Biographies:

Overseas Press Club and Peabody award-winner Brooke Gladstone started out in print journalism, writing on defense policy, strip-mining, broadcasting, and cable television. Gladstone joined National Public Radio (NPR) in 1987, working on “Weekend Edition” and “All Things Considered” before covering NPR’s media beat. She helped re-launch the WNYC-produced NPR radio program “On The Media” in 2001, where she serves as host and managing editor.

Guest-curator Irene Hofmann is Executive Director of the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore. Recent exhibitions include “Cell Phone: Art and the Mobile Phone” and “St. Cecilia,” a solo exhibition of works by Joseph Grigely. Hofmann previously served as Curator of Contemporary Art at the Orange County Museum of Art, where she co-curated the 2002 and 2004 California Biennials and the photography and video exhibition “Girls’ Night Out.” She has organized exhibitions and projects with artists such as Kutlug Ataman, Mark Dion, Jason Dodge, Fabrice Gygi, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, and Marjetica Potrc.

Brooklyn native Gregory Green has created controversial work addressing the evolution of various strategies for empowerment, which consider the use of violent and non-violent measures as vehicles for social or political change. Green is perhaps best known for his sculptures that are mechanically complete and potentially functional bombs or missiles, or that provide instruction on how to make large quantities of LSD.

Angel Nevarez and Valarie Tevere, who co-founded neuroTransmitter in 2001, fuse a combination of media forms and sound performance; their work re-articulates radio in multiple environments and contexts—public, exhibition, over the airwaves—and considers new possibilities for the broadcast spectrum as public space.

Siebren Versteeg creates computer-driven video installations that situate the viewer in paradoxical realms where the real and the virtual seem to interconnect. At once humorous and unsettling, his works feed real-time online data culled from CNN, The Associated Press, and internet diaries into video animations with digitally produced sound.

Image above: Gregory Green, M.I.T.A.R.B.U. (Mobile internet, television, and radio broadcast unit), Mixed media with 35-watt pirate FM broadcast system, 100-watt pirate television broadcast system, and internet broadcast system, 2000.
