Vigilance Improvisations by Eric Laska :: January 28, 2012; 8:00 pm :: Vox Populii Aux Performance Space, 319 N. 11th Street, Philadelphia PA.

This event will feature two pieces in the Vigilance Improvisations framework: “Mutability” performed by Bryan Eubanks and Eric Laska; and “Recursion” performed by Bonnie Jones and Reed Evan Rosenberg and presented by the Philadelphia Sound Forum.

Vigilance Improvisations is a series of structured frameworks for improvising electronic musicians. The archetypical design consists of two musicians, one working with computer and the other with non-computer electronics, improvising together while following unique visual scores. Each score corresponds to material changes related to the opposing musician’s instrumental sound source. The musicians are instructed to watch a designated meter vigilantly over the course of an improvisation all the while remaining conscious of the possible visual correlations that may or may not be provoked by a chance correspondence between a reading of the meter and the score. The scores are hosted in a folder online and the visual content therein is entirely sourced from the Internet. No recommendations are made concerning sound.

Eric Laska is a musician and assorted media artist from New York, currently living and working in Philadelphia. Examples from recent work and works-in-progress focus on the proliferation of sounds from localized material processes (Chicago Equinix, ProRemote), arranging improvised music for extended periods of time (Extended Improvisation for Gallery Hours forthcoming), and the composing of electronic music based on material considerations such as power consumption (Vigilance Improvisations).

Recent projects for the Internet include the sound application Impulse Blasts and the streaming installation Quartet With Pyramid Scheme, the latter conceived in collaboration with the respective members of said quartet- Jordan Topiel Paul, Richard Kamerman, and Reed Evan Rosenberg, and commissioned by turbulence.org In addition he is part of the internet surf club Double Happiness, who are represented in the New Museum of New York’s Younger Than Jesus: Artist Directory, and an editor/co-founder of the websites Lateral Addition and funvac. Ruez is an infrequent recording/production alias.

Bryan Eubanks (b. 1977, WA.) is a musician focused on collaborative improvisation, solo musical projects, and sound installations. He is primarily active within the tradition of live electronic music and has performed his work across the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea since becoming musically active in Portland, Oregon in the late 1990’s. Originally a saxophonist, his interests have expanded to include computer music, generative composition, sound localization, and the development of instruments that incorporate open-circuits, samplers, radio transmission, feedback, and other electronics. In 2001 he co- founded Rasbliutto to distribute and present music. He is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.

Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American writer, improvising musician, and performer working primarily with electronic music and text. Born in 1977 in South Korea she was raised on a dairy farm in New Jersey, and currently resides in Baltimore, MD. Bonnie creates improvised and composed text-sound performances that explore the fluidity and function of electronic noise (field recordings, circuit bending) and text (poetry, found, spoken). She is interested in how people perceive, “read” and interact with these sounds and texts given our current technological moment. Bonnie has presented her work in the US, Europe, and Asia and collaborates frequently with writers and musicians including Ric Royer, Carla Harryman, Andy Hayleck, Joe Foster, Andrea Neumann, Liz Tonne and Chris Cogburn. She received her MFA from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College.

Reed Evan Rosenberg - American male from New Jersey. Works in areas of radical computer music, improvised music and installation art. Recent projects include chaotic map synthesis studies, artificial intelligence driven composition systems, generative compositions for laser and LED lights, and networked improvisation driven computer music systems. Co-creator of funvac.net , an experiment in web based experimental music curation.

Converging Objects :: A set of workshops for musicians who improvise and use live electronics :: With Robert van Heumen & Anne La Berge :: On February 11 and 12, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. :: at 113 Dalston Lane, London. E8 1NH :: Cost: 120

Converging Objects is a hands-on workshop aimed at acoustic musicians who improvise and use live electronics, those who play with other musicians using electronics, or musicians and programmers who improvise and work with acoustic players.

Participants will explore ways to use technology as an intimate and/or integrated partner for acoustic instruments, designing hybrid or purely electronic instruments and ways in which to engage and integrate performers bodies as real-time creative forces. The focus will be on improvising skills as well as developing approaches to using live electronics. It is anticipated that the range of participants using electronics will encompass those just simply amplifying themselves to those using sophisticated computer programs.

Software explored will include Abelton Live, Max/MSP, LiSa and, Supercollider.

No previous experience of coding or use of programming environments is necessary. The course will conclude with a performance by participants and Anne and Robert.

Please e-mail to hello@callandresponse.org.uk to reserve a place. We will then e-mail you payment instructions. Please note places are limited to 15 and should be booked well in advance. Participants should bring their own laptops and instruments.

Information about the artists:
Robert van Heumen uses the laptop combined with various controllers to create sound worlds. As musician he uses STEIM’s live sampling software LiSa and realtime audio-syntheses software SuperCollider controlled by MIDI controllers and a joystick. Van Heumen is performing regularly with Shackle (with electro-flutist Anne LaBerge), ABATTOIR (with cellist/vocalist Audrey Chen), the audio-visual trio SKIF++ (with Jeff Carey & Bas van Koolwijk) and Davis/VanHeumen (with bass clarinetist Gareth Davis). He worked for 9 years at the Studio for Electo-Instrumental Music (STEIM) in Amsterdam as project manager, curator of the Local Stop concert series and member of the artistic committee.

Anne La Berge’s career as flutist/improviser/composer stretches across international and stylistic boundaries. Her most recent performances bring together the elements on which her international reputation is based: a ferocious and far-reaching virtuosity, a penchant for improvising delicately spun microtonal textures and melodies, and her wholly unique array of powerfully percussive flute effects, all combined with electronic processing.

The Dialogues - Nine Monday nights this fall, a new set of two award-winning performers are put “on the line” with someone they don’t know and cannot see. A guest sonic artist live mixes a hypnotic underbed to the tones of the conversation. After every performance, the entire audience is welcome to come out for a drink and a chance to “continue the conversation.”

Dexter Bullard is an award-winning Chicago theater artist with many ties to the worlds of performance, theater, and improvisation.
KEYNOTES: Professor Georgina Born (Cambridge University/University College London); Professor David Borgo (University of California San Diego); Evan Parker (saxophone) - invited performer and director of the ‘improvised music collective’

The Two Thousand + symposia series, in its fourth edition in 2010, has established itself as a forum for contemporary critical exchange and discussion relating to the performing arts. Since 2006 the symposium has been running alongside the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music in Belfast.

“Utilizing some of the most groundbreaking extended vocal techniques and original hardware instrument designs in the new generation of New York City’s improvisers, Lesley Flanigan’s work pushes through sheets of gorgeous shimmering sound into a sublime resonant feedback loop. With a background in sculpture, her work creates a kind of sonic terrain which encapsulates and envelopes the human voice (as well as the listener’s inner ear).”

Preceding her talk Lesley will be available for an afternoon seminar. Beginning at 2pm the seminar will form a peer-critique with participants presenting their work to the group. Spaces are limited to five and must be booked in advance from DAS. There is a charge of £10 (£5 concession) for each participant. Contact DAS for further information and bookings. In association with Bbeyond and Delawab
