Live Stage: High Spheres [dk Copenhagen]

marco-donnarumma_high-spheres_riga.jpgRe-New Digital Arts Festival presents High Spheres by Marco Donnarumma :: May 18, 2010; 7:30 pm :: Huset i Magstræde, Copenhagen, Denmark.

High Spheres is a participative multi-channel concert for found objects and reactive generative music by Edinburgh-based new media artist Marco Donnarumma. The action takes place open air. No musical instruments are provided, but stones and leaves. Audience can use six microphones and a 6.1 surround system to amplify any kind of sound they wish to produce. The whole sonic matter is managed by a Pure Data-based software for generative music developed by the author, which interacts with the audience processing sounds in real-time, analyzing the input signals and generating new sounds and textures out of the collected data. NMR Commission: “Trace Aureity” by Adam Nash

trace_aureity_logo_300×95.jpgTrace Aureity by Adam Nash (aka Adam Ramona) [Needs Second Life account and client (free)] – Trace Aureity is an interactive, immersive, audiovisual sculpture located in the 3-D synthetic world Second Life. There are eighty-eight manipulated field recordings — from city streets, birdsong, to talkback radio — and ninety-six nested rotating objects densely arranged in a three dimensional grid. Avatars, either solo or in groups, generate sounds by moving through the installation. Some of the innermost nested objects, colored red, also spawn glowing spheres which fly out and bounce around inside the work, triggering sounds as they pass through other objects. Because the playable space is so dense, players are rewarded by slowing down their movements as much as possible, since even miniscule movements create differences in sonic output. Continue reading

The Occupants — by Stephan Moore — is a generative composition with some aspects that can be influenced through single- or multi-user interaction. Moore has used the piece to search for answers to both profound and insipid questions, such as: What does it mean to compose a “site-specific” composition when the site is the internet? Can a generative algorithm be imparted with a sense of long-term form that is also not pre-determined? How successfully can humans be programmed to be good collaborators with software algorithms, towards the latters’ goals? Continue reading

Live Stage: Experiments on the Notation of Shapes [hk Hong Kong]

Experiments on the Notation of Shapes by Portuguese artist and Hong Kong resident, Joao Vasco Paiva, is a generative multi-channel video installation where Hong Kong cityscapes are used as coordinates for sound synthesis. Computational translation, footage of urban planning and architectural elements are used as a musical score. In this work, a post-apocalyptic aura consumes the concrete form of the metropolis. Two wall-based projections present Hong Kong cityscapes. The city, its emptiness and its structure are kept in “time images” that solicit contemplation. Continue reading

Live Stage: 1,444 minutes – a generative net.art and sound work

1,444 minutes is the precise time it takes to move from one day to the next. Within this small space of time, it’s possible for a personal or even global change to occur. While many of us attempt to plan our lives and predict our individual or situational future, much of what happens is left to unknown devices. In the same vein, the upcoming project ONEthousand.four. – hundredANDfortyFour.minutes is a new generative net.art and sound work that is left to an unknown author to score. It is an emergent or behavioral musical system that commits to few parameters. Composer John Cage worked with a similar system he called “chance operations”. By using the I Ching to make compositional and artistic decisions, Cage was able to free himself and the work from personal likes, dislikes and bias. Continue reading

Net_Music_Weekly: “Chirps” by Joao Vasco Paiva

chirps.jpgVideotage is proud to present Hong Kong-based Portuguese artist Joao Vasco Paiva as the first selected artist-in-residence of fuse:: residency program 2010. The objective of fuse:: residency program has always been encouraging individuals interested in the field of new media art, be it art & technology, art & science or art & anything, to create new works. With the support from Videotage, Joao Vasco Paiva will bring the audience a new sculptural sound installation Chirps, through which he creates a score by determining rules.

The prototype of the work (v1) was presented in the Microwave International New Media Art Festival 2009 in which a set of toy birds performed a sequence of calls and movement interfered by the passers-by at the lobby of Langham Hotel, while this time, Vasco has made the toy birds migrate to the raw space of Videotage where they would react to the motion and sound of a new player – a real mynah bird. PROCESS Festival Berlin is now accepting proposals for performances and new-media work, to be shown at our 2 day festival in mid-March 2010. The Festival seeks to highlight new and compelling work in the field of generative or process music – focusing on sound pieces which are inspired by or emulate algorithms, biology, or other defined systems.

From scores generated from nature (Mamoru Fujieda’s “Patterns of Plants”) or mathematics (John Cage’s “Sonatas and Interludes”), to interactives which allow users to create music (Brian Eno’s Bloom for iPhone) or a system as simple as 2 tape recorders (“It’s Gonna Rain” by Steve Reich), this space has enjoyed a compelling history. Live Stage: Epic Doom: Black Metal City [us Queens]

Analogous Projects is pleased to announce Epic Doom: Black Metal City, a generative sound- and video-installation illustrating societal ills as emergent phenomena. It utilizes the familiar and extreme black-metal aesthetic to allude to modern society’s shared sense of panic. This immersive installation processes the physical actions of visitors and passersby and re-presents those actions in real time, providing illustrations of human agency and diffusion of responsibility.

Admission will be free and open to the public.

Generative Behaviors: Generative sound by definition is music that is ever-changing and that is created by a system. The notion that a system, in the case of these works a laptop computer, can not only compute but create a musical production is fascinating; the language of the computer [binary] could be seen as elaborate enough to produce creativity out of zeros and ones. If this is so, the possibilities of who and what will be considered the artist of the future enters new territory as we embark upon the 21st Century. Continue reading
