Converging Objects is a hands-on workshop aimed at acoustic musicians who improvise and use live electronics, those who play with other musicians using electronics, or musicians and programmers who improvise and work with acoustic players.

Participants will explore ways to use technology as an intimate and/or integrated partner for acoustic instruments, designing hybrid or purely electronic instruments and ways in which to engage and integrate performers bodies as real-time creative forces. Continue reading

Georgia Tech’s chamber music ensemble-in-residence, Sonic Generator, will explore open musical scores on the boundaries of composition, improvisation, and interactivity in a free exhibition and concert in partnership with the Woodruff Arts Center. The performance features music with unconventional and technologically-driven scores by Kaija Saariaho, Frederic Rzewski, Jason Freeman, Bill Ryan, David Kim-Boyle, and Akito Van Troyer. It takes place at the Rich Theatre at Woodruff Arts Center on January 24th. The exhibition opens at 7:00 p.m. and the concert begins at 8:00 p.m. Continue reading

Experimental turntablist Ignaz Schick will guide participants through the manifold and rich history of experimental turntablism and its various techniques & approaches. He will give a short introduction to the history of turntablism, presenting various styles from musique concrete, fluxus, plunderphonics/downtown noise, onkyo, etc. and will demonstrate various techniques behind those approaches. On the 20th of April, 1914, immediately before the outbreak of the First World War, the premiere performance of a revolutionary noise symphony, Awakening of a City by futurist artist Luigi Russolo took place.

Almost a century later, a group of artists, led by Brighton-based Sound Artist, Joseph Young, come together to respond to the surviving 7 bars of the printed score in a series of ReAwakenings. Continue reading

Deadline for submitting originals: October 15, 2011.

Transcultural Music Review 16 (2012) will publish a special dossier on the new forms of music in audiovisual media. The dossier will be prepared in collaboration with the research group ‘Musica y medios audiovisuale’ from the Society for Ethnomusicology-SIBE/IASPM-Spain and will be edited by Teresa Fraile, Eduardo Vi’uela, and Maria Edurne Zuazu.

For this dossier, we are particularly interested in the role of music in the emergence of new genres (such as mash-ups, lip-dubs, etc.) and in the transformation of the discursive strategies of the traditional media (film, TV programs, music videos, video games, etc.). Continue reading
