Live Stage: ((audience)) [us NYC]

aud.jpgThe New York premiere of ((audience)), a 5.1 surround sound festival :: June 5, 2010; 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 4:00 pm :: Ramiken Crucible, 221 E Broadway, New York City :: The day of screenings will be followed by an evening concert of experimental noise, featuring MV Carbon & Tony Conrad, DUBKNOWDUB, and Loud Objects.

Conceived in 2006, the centerpiece of ((audience)) is a 2 1/2 hour program of 5.1 surround sound works by eight international artists, presented in the dark. This immersive experience in cinematic audio features works by Jamie Allen, Bryan Jacobs, the Loud Objects, Simona Brinkmann, Uli Schuster, Natasha Barrett, Emmanuel Madan and Anna Friz, and Cedric Maridet. The ((audience)) program will be screened three times in complete darkness: 11am, 1:30pm, and 4pm. Audience members may come and go from the screenings, but may enter only at intermissions. Timetables for individual works will be posted outside Ramiken Crucible.

In the evening, ((audience)) will host an experimental noise concert featuring MV Carbon & Tony Conrad, DUBKNOWDUB, and Loud Objects. Admission to the evening concert is $10 – $20, sliding scale, and will benefit ((audience)) programs and artists.

Artist Bios:

MV CARBON uses fragmented field recordings, analog synthesizers, samplers, tape manipulations, and photosensitive oscillators to assimilate structural chaos and decomposition. She creates eerie and unsettling compositions using her voice as an instrument and processing it through tape machines. She plays cello through tape loops and guitar pedals and often uses 16mm film imagery as a backdrop for her performances. She is a member of Metalux, Bad Faces, Foamula and the now defunct Bride of No No. She has work released on labels such as 5RC, Load, Hanson, Veglia, No Fun Productions, Nihilist, Atavistic, and Ecstatic Peace.

TONY CONRAD is a profoundly influential composer, musician, filmmaker and artist and one of the most compelling figures in 20th century music. At the core of Conrad’s legend is his work as a violinist, in which primal, enveloping drones create an oscillating ritual theater. In 1962 he co-founded the groundbreaking ensemble Dream Syndicate. He and his collaborators — including La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and future Velvet Underground co-founders John Cale and Angus MacLise — created some of the most revolutionary music of that – or any – decade. Conrad’s practice extends to experimental film and video; his 1966 work The Flicker is considered a masterpiece of structuralist film. His recent work includes field recordings, piano compositions, film soundtracks, electronic compositions, and a multiplicity of other creative projects.

LOUD OBJECTS (Tristan Perich, Kunal Gupta, Katie Shima) create electronic noise with minimal components: microchips, a power jack, an audio jack, and wire. The group solders custom audio circuits live, creating audible fluctuations of electricity with these bare elements. Gradually building a complex sound circuit, they present electronic music in a form closer to a physical instrument than a laptop. Their performances invite the audience to bear conscious witness to each musical gesture: the addition of a microchip; the soldering of an output pin to the audio jack.

DUBKNOWDUB is “dubbed through time and space. Speaker crackling interplanetary metal insect sounds scrape away at discernible beats under a warm fuzzy din of delayed detritus while these ghetto rejects push a shopping cart and sample the howling sounds of the city.”

Conceived in 2006, ((audience)) is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new context for works by emerging and established sound artists and composers. For the first decade, ((audience)) will focus on the cinema as a technical and distributive platform, including the organization of a nomadic biennial and arts festival in partnership with select arts organizations worldwide.

Into the night // 2006 // 5.1 surround sound acousmatic composition
