Figment is an offshoot of a Festival on Governor’s Island in NYC, which in turn has its roots in a European Festival. Operating under the umbrella of the Cambridge Arts Council , Figment Boston will happen alongside the Cambridge River Festival on June 5, 2010. It will have the riverside from Western Ave almost to the Weeks footbridge and Memorial drive to fill with Art and performance. Figment is looking for interactive art; sculpture, music, performance, what have you. The more interactive, the better, but a temporary sculpture park would be fine as well.

This is a completely non-commercial venture. There is no selling, no corporate sponsors, no advertising, just art and the artists speaking for themselves. Pass the info on to anyone that you think might be interested in contributing, either by bringing art, performing, participating as a spectator or volunteering to help make it happen. Any suggestions that you might have, people that we should talk to, or just if you could help spread the word amongst your part of the art world would be awesome and much appreciated. We are also looking to raise a bit of funds, but that is an entirely different matter from gathering up the artists to light the way.

Here is an opportunity for a Cambridge hacker space to showcase whatever they want in an un-judged atmosphere. For information on how to get there: http://figmentproject.org/2010/events/figment-boston-2010/figment-boston-getting-there/

  1. David Koren:

FIGMENT started on Governors Island in 2007. It doesn’t trace its origins to any European Festival. Influences include the Burning Man event in Nevada, as well as the wealth of participatory art works and events created in New York and elsewhere, including The Gates by Christo and Jean-Claude, Ashes & Snow by Gregory Colbert with Shigeru Ban, The Terminal 5 Exhibition by Rachel Ward, Muster by Allison Smith, and many others. The name FIGMENT comes from Andy Warhol, who said that if he could have anything on his gravestone, the word “FIGMENT” would be it. The Boston event is being created by a local team of volunteers, with guidance from the experienced team in New York. Submit your work and come to FIGMENT! What are you bringing?
