Live Stage: Late at Tate Britain [uk London]

late.jpgLate Night Radio at Tate Britain :: August 7, 2009; 6:00 – 9:30pm.

Become your own radio receiver at August’s at Late At Tate Britain as part of Late Night Radio, a night curated by Radio 3’s Late Junction presenter Max Reinhardt. Wander along the dial that is the spaces of Tate Britain and you can tune into an eclectic mix of sound and visuals. Experience witty and inventive sounds from singer-songwriter and guitarist Keziah Jones who fuses raw blues elements with hard, edgy funk rhythms, solo exploratory inspirational jazz piano from Zoe Rahman and early music from Amanda Cook, one of the UK’s rising stars in the world of classical guitar.

Plus live improvised free jazz from musicians Jason Yarde and Finn Peters who will be wandering round the building with baritone sax and tenor. Errol Linton’s Blue Period, Sonny Boy Williamson meets King Tubby, the Langham Research Centre, with works especially composed for Stockhausen’s oscillators by Robert Worby, and COMA Voices, with performances of seminal works by Cornelius Cardew (The Great Learning: Paragraph 7) and John Cage (Radio Music and Imaginary Landscape No 4), directed by Robert Worby.

There will also be a large scale screening/premiere of Jo Lawrence’s especially commissioned new animation Pavementopera and a screening of Grace Ndiritu’s thought provoking My Bloodself: Blood Painting with soundtrack created by Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt.

Also recorded sequences and soundscapes by Late Junction presenters Verity Sharp, Max Reinhardt and Fiona Talkington, including FRO:zen, a soundscape devised and produced in Norway.

Turn the dial further and wander downstairs and tune into inquisitive airwaves, radio programming and time-based sequencing presented by Chelsea College of Art’s MA students. The framework of radio explores cultural production in an exhausting 3.5 hour session with sounds by artists Leo Koivistoinen, Lucia Aspesi, and Yoshi Sodeoko. Adverts by Lena Tutuniian interject the evening at choreographed intervals as performances by Steve Kado and Giles Bailey provide forums for discussion. Inside the studio, a talk by David Raymond Conroy, a performance by Rita Evans (The Objectifiers), and Mark Fisher (K-Punk) discusses the role of radio in art practice. .

Plus: BSL Talk :: Jennifer Little – Introduction to Richard Long 19:00 – 20:00 – Tate Britain Manton Studio :: followed by entry to the Richard Long exhibition. Richard Long creates sculpture and large-scale photographic works in rural and remote areas by up-ending stones, marking the ground and making subtle alterations to the landscapes he passes through. Join art historian Jennifer Little for a tour in British Sign Language to understand afresh the artist’s radical rethinking of the relationship between art and nature. Voice over by Tracey Tyer. Jennifer’s talk will be followed by free entry to the Richard Long exhibition. She will be available to answer any questions.
