After over a century of innovation, appropriation, and mutation, radio is now being re-invented to become what it has essentially always been – a communications space in the widest possible sense.

Composer Jin Hi Kim will present the European Premiere of her Digital Buddha for electric komungo and video with percussionist Gerry Hemingway at Expo Zaragoza 2008 ::Zaragoza, Spain :: July 28-29 at 7:00 pm :: and on July 30 at Museo do mar de Galicia in Spain.

The work begins with a contemplative hypnotic video Mandala and the ancient 4th century acoustic komungo that is rooted in Buddhist meditation. Digital Buddha gradually moves into a video mix with extraordinary juxtapositions, fast cut swirling images of a deconstructed electric komungo that becomes a reconfigured live performance through contemporary digital technology. Resonating Bodies is a series of mixed media installations and community outreach projects, which focus on the biodiversity of pollinators indigenous to the ecosystems of the Greater Toronto Area. Conceived by Sarah Peebles with Rob King, Rob Cruickshank and Anne Barros, the installations illuminate aspects of local biodiversity, such as bumblebee colonies and their foraging activities, ultraviolet bee vision, and pollinator / plant co-evolution. Invisible Story is a site specific, extensive, interactive installation created especially for WRO Art Center. It uses vintage and contemporary media technologies: a system of 8mm projectors (construction by Meopta from the 1970s), screening looped film sequences is steered by a matrix of ultrasound sensors that controls also the sound and light layers of the installation. Takuro will introduce the general history of STEIM, from its start in the late 60s as a collective of composers, improvisors and musicians to a research lab, artist in residence and venue for adventurous live electronic arts. Later he will demo his own performance set up consisting of a turntable, dj mixer, self-built USB controller and Max/MSP. Crossfader-triggered sampler “cut n play” and right-hand usb interface “audile” are some of the unique modules that he has designed to seamlessly integrate live sampling into the flow of turntable performance. abertura is a one-day event which presents VJing and realtime audiovisual performances, presentations, discussions and workshops, by national and international artists. In its second edition, abertura2, the theme of which is Communities, Collectives and Collaboration, in which theory can be developed in conjunction with technology (last year’s “abertura 2007” theme), we will explore a variety of approaches people use to work together in the making of “live performance”, and its related expression and dissemination. The event has a strong experimental component and this second edition brings to Portugal a large international palette of people and work.
