Live Stage: Deep Listening Convergence [Troy, NY]

dlconvergencebanner.pngDeep Listening Institute presents Deep Listening Convergence 2007: Online Residency.

In a gesture of sonic peace around the world, the Deep Listening Institute with funding from the New York State Music Fund and NYSCA presents the Deep Listening Convergence from January 15-June 10, 2007. This unique project was conceived as an opportunity to bring together 45 international artists, from the Deep Listening label, Deep Listening certificate program and other friendly collaborators across the globe, to use state-of-the-art Web 2.0 technology. These artists are collaborating in an unprecedented online residency jamming over Skype, holding message forums on Basecamp, forming new, diverse ensembles and posting recorded sessions on Imeem.

Participating artists include Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, Monique Buzzarté, Scot Gresham-Lancaster, Ione, Vonn New, Phala Tracy, Anne Bourne, Al Margolis, Gayle Young and many other artists of note. As part of the world-wide community of experimental and improvisational artists, the 45 artists are developing new scores as a gesture of peace to be broadcast online and with three concerts in upstate New York. June 8-10.

In June of 2007, participants will converge in the Hudson River valley with 3 nights of concerts and public workshops utilizing and discussing the new techniques of using online rehearsal leading to more conventional concerts and for expanding music practice.

Concerts:
Friday, June 8 at 8 pm
The Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy, NY

Saturday, June 9 at 8 pm

Sunday, June 10 at 3 pm

These collaborations have inspired a host of pre-concert online concerts. This past Wednesday, April 25, 10 pm PST, Scot Gresham-Lancaster of Oakland, CA invited members of the residency to a “risk taking” performance during his concert at the San Jose Music Department. Gresham-Lancaster initiated a big conference call on Skype to 10 participants in New York, Illinois, Seattle, Switzerland, Canada and New York City. For a five minute piece entitled “Etude before the Convergence,” Gresham-Lancaster provided a score for the artists to follow. The performance pushed the boundries of internet-based audio bringing parts of the world together for an international improvisation. Gresham-Lancaster said of the results, “The piece was a 6 out of 10 in the hall with some audience members very enthusiastic.”
