Diane Bertolo: over/time

over/time is a digital-era memento mori, a variable-collage about decay and the passage of time that doubles as a clock. Created in Director/Flash, it randomly cycles through and selects from an array of images as a function of the time registered by the computer's internal clock. These images appear onscreen in unique configuration--on-the-fly collages that coalesce and vanish with the passage of seconds, minutes and hours. The images in each quadrant together correspond to the time.

Brooke A. Knight: Nocturne 1 The Nocturne series is an ongoing investigation into the relationship between drawing, photography, and digital processes. Referencing James Abbott McNeill Whistler's famous Nocturne series—in which he pushed his paintings into the realm of abstraction—Knight's series pushes photography into abstraction through simple digital manipulation. As a result, the works look like drawings. In essence, they are true photographs, literally "light drawings," as fireworks are the source of the images. The result is a series of inversions: the expectation of Nocturnes to be dark, rather than light; photographs that look like drawings; digital manipulation that appears handmade; and quiet pictures from loud fireworks.Digital print on acid-free paper, 5 x 5 inches (image size)Cell_Tagging [commission]

Steven Lam: Aphasiatic Terror T-shirts: Len(in)nonThis project is an extension from the artist's Lennon/Lenin video series in the a bright T-shirt format. By scrambling the biographies of John Lennon with Vladimir Lenin the artists attempts to remobilize a political dialectic once stalled after the failure of a modernist utopia. Cotton-soft, brightly colored, yet radically chic, the T-shirts announces the owner's preoccupation with radical 60s politics fused with old-school Leninist conviction.Iron-on image on cotton T's; 2 medium or large Red and black. Michael Mandiberg: Exchange ProgramThe Exchange Program: From April 20th to 30th 2002 Michael Mandiberg went to Toronto to live Amy Satterthwaite's life, and she came to Los Angeles to live his. With the intent of "playing" each other, they took on each other's name, space, friends, family, jobs and possessions, and let go of their own. They both created instructions on how to "be" or "perform" themselves. Michael Mandiberg's instructions took the form of The Essential Guide to Performing Michael Mandiberg, an online do-it-yourself guide which was commissioned by Turbulence.org.

Andrea Polli: Retina Burn"In Retina Burn, soundwaves generated by the sun are manipulated by movements of the performer's eye, thereby allowing the listener to audibly 'view' the sun without the usual risk of damaged vision. The composition's low hums and fluttering sine waves combine with percussive blinks and squints to gradually move through a series of sonic dilations; a feast for the ears prepared by the eye." -John Kannenberg, Stasisfield Founder/CuratorAudio CDHeat and the Heartbeat of the City [commission]
Andrea Polli: Atmospherics/Weather Works "Atmospherics/Weather Works is a performance, an installation and a distributed software project aimed at extracting sounds from storms and other weather events. The sounds are generated directly from the original data of the event in a detailed and physically accurate simulation. They analyzed their data, then created the sounds, obtaining evocative and disquieting pieces which, as well as reconstructing unique events, underline the nature's ability to autonomously generate complex rhythms and melodies." -Neural.it e-music newsAudio CDHeat and the Heartbeat of the City [commission]
Andrea Polli: Queensbridge Wind Power Project"The Queensboro Bridge is a beautiful artifact of the industrial age and this project represents the transition that can and must be made from the industrial age, dependent on fossil fuels, to an industrial era that lives off of solar income...wind is solar energy too, and all sustainability is about getting the income to expense ratio on solar income to something that can be sustained by living systems."-Paul Hawken, author of Natural Capitalism in response to the project

Yoshi Sodeoka: Noise Driven Ambient Audio And Visuals

Noise Driven Ambient Audio And Visuals is a compilation of experimental noise/ambient videos created by C505 and music by KNBS. A far cry from music videos, the pieces are more analogous to experimental / abstract film and video art. C505's aesthetic shuns the pursuit of 3D digital realism and sanitized graphic design and instead embraces the layered residue of analog distortions and glitches. Uniquely, both the sound and video are created simultaneously by C505 and KNBS yielding a woven relationship that feels symbiotic instead of driven by one or the other. C505’s favored techniques include, video feedback loops, video flicker induction, CRT distortions created by magnetic fields and capturing various visual and audio static from a multitude of analog sources. Over 50 minutes of content, this DVD also contains guest director's work such as Associates In Science, Lew Baldwin, Day-Dream, Jonathan Turner and WeWorkForThem.

Jody Zellen: The Blackest SpotThe blackest Spot is a limited edition artists book that accompanies the website Crowds and Power that was the October 2002 selection for the Whitney Artport. More information about the book here. Crowds and Power uses mediated images to explore the relationship between space, memory, and territory. Windows containing image fragments emphasize the displacement of individuals and the transformation of urban space where large gatherings, demonstrations, and struggles are represented. By juxtaposing charged images with theoretical and philosphical texts about the nature of crowds this website explores internal and external conflicts.
