Open Data in a Semantic Web Perspective [ca Toronto]

Workshop on Open Data in a Semantic Web Perspective :: May 27, 2012 :: York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (co-located with Canadia AI 2012) :: Call for Papers: Deadline – February 22, 2012.

Open Data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. Open Data recently, gaining popularity with the rise of the W3C Semantic Web prospective vision.

The LinkedData network, promoted by the W3C, is the most visible part of what an open Web of data, as a complement of a Web of document could be. Continue reading

“R-Shief” by VJ Um Amel

R-Shief is a digital platform that provides real-time analysis of opinion in the Arab world about late-breaking issues. By using aggregate data from Twitter and the Web, R-Shief can dissect how people in Egypt are reacting to, say, the latest changes to the constitutional process, or how Libyans perceive the presence of NATO forces and Bahrainis perceive the presence of Saudi military, or how the pro-regime supporters in Syria are acting out on social media platforms. We are achieving this through the results of our Pan-Arab Internet aggregator as well as Twitter data mining tools, and by publishing data visualizations based on findings. Continue reading

Workshop on Semantic Value of Links [ca Toronto]

HT2010 Workshop: Rhetorical and Semantic Possibilities of Links: Cultural and Literary Applications of Links :: June 13, 2010 :: Toronto Canada (as part of the 4 day HT2010 conference) :: Call for Papers — Deadline: April 30, 2010: email to deenalarsen [at]

Mark Bernstein has written that the link is “the most important new punctuation mark since the comma.” More than that, the link actually conveys meaning. But how do people use links to communicate ideas? This workshop is designed to uncover the semantic value of the link and its potential rhetorical effects. We want to know what has been the cultural, literary, rhetorical, and semantic impact of the link to date, and what future effects can we anticipate and bring about. Continue reading

Society of the Query Conference [nl Amsterdam]

Society of the Query Conference :: November 13 – 14, 2009 :: Trouw Amsterdam.

In the information society the current reality is an increasing dependence on technological resources to create order and to find meaning in a gigantic quantity of online data. Searching has surpassed browsing and surfing as main activity on the web. This development turned the search engine into our most significant point of reference. Its focus on efficiency and expansion of services tends to veil the nature of the technology as well as underlying (corporate) ideologies.

In this query driven society, The Society of the Query conference seeks to analyze what impact our reliance on resources to manage knowledge on the Internet has on our culture. Continue reading

Review of Protect Protect – Jenny Holzer by Chad Scoville

Protect Protect – Jenny Holzer, Whitney Museum, New York, New York; Through May 31 2009.

Linearity constructed as a representational praxis in the realm of data visualization as a contemporary means of presenting information is a conservative act. Our inundated visual culture symbolically represents its vectors of meaning and content through personalized media bands, where users and players intermingle and create the algorithm in real-time, further personalizing and sharing visual experience.

Search queries and semantic webs construct infinitely complex folksonomys of intricately sophisticated subjectivities; a breakpoint of tactility between the previous two decades is perceptible as the difference between Usenet and Youtube. An intergenerational and vastly disparate structure of representation engenders vertigo of differentiality; the pre-internet, the internet, and the post-internet age groups interpolate profoundly different architectures of cultural instigation.
