When Virtual Reality Feels Real

“Despite advances in computer graphics, few people would think virtual characters or objects are real. Yet placed in a virtual reality environment most people will interact with them as if they are really there. European researchers are finding out why.

In trying to understand presence – the propensity of humans to respond to fake stimuli as if they are real – the researchers are not just gaining insights into how the human brain functions. They are also learning how to create more intense and realistic virtual experiences, opening the door to myriad applications for healthcare, training, social research and entertainment…” Continue reading When Virtual Reality Feels Real, ScienceDaily, May 13, 2009. The Society of Dance History Scholars Annual Conference in conjunction with the Dance Critics Association: Topographies: Sites, Bodies, Technologies :: June 19-22, 2009 :: Stanford and San Francisco, California.

Inspired by the idea of “topographies” as the mapping of the physical features of a place or landscape, presentations from scholars and artists will investigate moving bodies as they occupy, mobilize, and traverse diverse terrains. Investigations include: How do we dance our locale? How does place, marked by history and national struggles, change how we dance? How can dance and new technologies create new sites of encounter? Can we imagine different, even fantastic geographies of movement and exchange?

Krzysztof Wodiczko: Guests [it Venice]

Krzysztof Wodiczko. Guests :: June 4 – November 22, 2009 :: Opening Reception: June 4; 5:00 pm :: Polish Pavilion, 53rd International Venice Biennale.

The protagonists of Krzysztof Wodiczko’s projection in the Polish Pavilion are immigrants, people who, not being ‘at home’, remain ‘eternal guests’. ‘Strangers’, ‘others’ are key notions in Wodiczko’s artistic practice, be it in the projections, the Vehicles, or the technologically advanced Instruments that enable those who, deprived of rights, remain mute, invisible and nameless to communicate, gain a voice, make a presence in public space.

The projection, created specially for the Biennial, transforms the space of the Polish Pavilion into a place where the viewers watch scenes taking place seemingly outside, behind an illusion of windows, their projection on the pavilion’s windowless walls. Continue reading

After the success at the Cube Festival, a new version of the pervasive game MYTH will be staged during one week in Paris – Place de la Bastille. This new version includes a giant screen on which you can follow the gamers. This game prototype combines geolocation technologies with the acquisition of physiological data of the gamer. The city, the body and the technologies compose the vectors of an experience where the network and the local, the physical and the virtual as well as the intimacy and the public lose there opposite sense. The game is the ideal framework to explore this new paradigm of urbanity.

The game is a collaboration between wolf ka_res publica and XiLabs, a startup of pervasive games.
