Call: work needed for a Library on Themes of Openness

resize-cropphp.jpegI am writing to you as I am researching content for the constitution of a film and reading library which will be permanently installed in the reading area (which is presently being set up) at Gasworks, London, and will be available as far as possible, as an online linked bibliography or resource.

This initiative stems from Disclosures, “http://gasworks.org.uk/exhibitions/detail.php?id=344“, a project exploring the extent to which Open Source methodologies find applications in fields of cultural production outside of the Internet. Continue reading

Live Stage: Shu Lea Cheang and 8 Garlic Bulbs [it Naples]

garlic-concept.jpgAs Naples garbage piled up higher and higher, stinky art does money talk :: Join aglio bidding :: May 16 – June 30, 2008.

AglioMania (GarlicMania) refers to TulipoMania that took place in early 17th century Netherlands. During that time, tulip bulbs were traded for enormous prices and eventually crashed, thus the term bubble economy. AglioMania re-enacts the maniac trading phenomena with garlic produced in Italy during the 6 weeks of the “Enterprise of Art” exhibition at Palazzo delle Arti Napoli. Continue reading

Eddo Stern at Edith-Ruß-Haus für Medienkunst [de Oldenburg]

stern.jpg Eddo Stern ‘Darkgame’ :: An interactive computer game :: 18 May 2008 :: Edith Russ Site for Media Art :: Katharinenstrasse 23, D-26121, Oldenburg :: Tel: +49 (0)441/235-3208 :: In Darkgame, a computer game, Eddo Stern has developed a game context in which the players are deprived of several of their senses. Special accessories allow players in Darkgame to act using only one sense: seeing, hearing or touching – constraints that can represent both advantages and drawbacks. By manipulating the scope of sensory immersion and multiplayer interaction, Darkgame is carefully designed to accommodate sighted and hearing players as well as deaf and/or blind players in the same virtual game world.  Through accessible yet balanced game design, Darkgame  challenges and experiments with the commercially established range of computer game genres.

IMMEDIATE ART

latznia.jpgIMMEDIATE ART :: The Centre for Contemporary Art Laznia in Gdansk (PL) and curator Kasia Wozniak are happy to present the IMMEDIATE ART project: the IMMEDIATE ART project concerns a wide range of phenomena that deal with the modern mutual relationships between arts and new technologies. Our aim is to build a panorama of these artistic phenomena and offer an event dealing with these issues in an integral form and wide thematic scope.IMMEDIATE ART is a series of lectures given by the eminent theoreticians. In parallel to the above mentioned lectures, the invited artists will present their works, discuss the interconnectedness of art and technology and will talk about their art from the point of view of the latest technological changes. We are deeply convinced that these two complementary cycles will provide the public with an in-depth panorama of the fascinating phenomena in the body of New Media Art. Continue reading

Conflux 2008 Now Accepting Submissions

timthumbphp.jpegConflux 2008 is open for business and accepting submissions. They have a stellar list of curators for this year’s festival who are looking forward to reviewing everything you send their way. Please go to the submissions tab on their site and follow the directions there to send them your proposal. A quick word on the $5 application fee—obviously they’d rather not charge this and they try and keep Conflux as cheap as possible (it’s mostly free) but to be fair, the costs of development work and putting on this festival aren’t cheap by any stretch! They think it’s reasonable, but feel free to reach out to them if you have any serious concern. Continue reading

Wi: Journal of Mobile Media

01.jpgWelcome to the inaugural edition of : Wi: Journal of Mobile Media (formerly known as Wi: Journal of the Mobile Digital Commons Network) addresses the latest in international scholarship, artistic productions and design research on mobility, wireless technologies, and digital media. The theme of this first issue, “Pedestrian Traffic,” reaffirms the centrality of mobilities research and practice to the journal.

This issue brings together international artists and researchers, whose work contributes, in varying forms, to the theme of ‘pedestrian traffic.’ As the pieces in this issue demonstrate, pedestrian traffic is inherently multifarious both in theory and practice, and in the technical and non-technical possibilities it yields.
