Mapping Dharavi [in Mumbai]

mumbai.jpgWe are currently looking for volunteers / NGOs / Academics / Researchers / Institutions who have interest and would be willing to contribute to the two month Urban Body studio organised by Spacelab research laboratory for urbanism / city from Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands with a special focus on Mapping Dharavi, Mumbai.

The project aims at exploring and mapping the complexity of elements, which constitute the urban, social and cultural texture of squatter settlements in the city of Mumbai. Considering these areas within the broader framework of urban transformations and redevelopment projects, the studio looks at the slums as forms of ‘emergent’ urbanities, which function with a multiple logic and structure of relations both within itself and with the outside. Participation and Media Production

media.jpgParticipation and Media Production: Critical Reflections on Content Creation; The ICA 2007 San Francisco Conference Theme Book; edited by Nico Carpentier and Benjamin De Cleen – In an era when (especially new) media are celebrated for their participatory potential, questions about the nature and intensity of these participatory processes seem to be superfluous. But raising these questions pushes us into a critical mode towards the changes that have lead to the present-day media landscape. This volume’s authors aim to activate this critical mode and reflect on the participatory nature of contemporary media organizations and products.

In order to stand even a remote chance to realize this objective, and to critically unravel the societal role of participation, we need to acknowledge that participation is a complex and contested notion, covering a wide variety of meanings and practices that are converging into a hybrid of technologies, genres, and formats. “News Brews” by Benjamin Brown

newsbrews-730537.jpgBecause coffee is such an important part not only of the daily routine of millions of Westerners but also of the economies and societies of the third world countries in which it is grown, it provides an excellent medium for exploration of taste informatics and specifically beverage informatics.

The News Brews device is an exploration of the possibility of creating a beverage which provides information about the daily news. News Brews connects to internet news feeds and parses them to determine the relative frequency at which different coffee growing regions are mentioned. It then brews a cup of coffee from freshly ground whole beans which contains relative proportions of beans grown in the regions in that day’s news. [via]

Turbulence Commission: “MYPOCKET” by Burak Arikan

mypocket.jpgTurbulence Commission: MYPOCKET by Burak Arikan [Needs a Java and Flash enabled browser; best on Firefox or Safari; optional RSS reader for Transaction Feed] MYPOCKET discloses the artist’s personal financial records to the world by exploring and revealing essential patterns in the daily transactions of his bank account. These are the records that we usually keep secret, whereas financial institutions intensively analyze them to score our credibility. Archived on the site, the artist’s two years of spending history is analyzed by the custom software to predict future spending; these predictions sometimes determine his future choices, creating a system in which both the software and the artist adapt to one another. Influenced by today’s techno-cultural milieu, MYPOCKET presents a hybrid interface to a living physical/digital process. Continue reading
