Controlling nature would be a tradition
of modern man and his need to put the world in a heirarchical
structure with himself at the top.
You knew if the desert was for you or not; If you were to
feel lost or hopeless, it would be difficult for you to complete
the Danakil. It wasn't heat, thirst or fatigue which would
fail some. It would be the psychological effects of being
alone with yourself in the world in the moment.
The sun was directly above his head. They would stop and
feed the camels. The Guides would rest their bodies, but their
minds would be active in preparing for the evening's game.
He had already decided to use his morning dream as his contribution
to the game.
He liked looking at the sun through his closed lids. He thought
of how he could describe a place which would have a sunlit filter
over everything. The heat from the sun would effect the intensity
of the filter. If he combined his dream then there would be two
suns heating up the vision. In the distance he heard the call of
the caravan. It was time to move on.
It was near dusk. There was a change in energy from the Guides.
An announcement was made. One of the Guides spoke of transforming
the world with their visions by transferring them to the minds of
people from foreign lands. The desert was one of the few places
which had remained little unchanged. Almost all other land had been
altered to near destruction. The Guides decided it was time to use
